Instagram’s Big Star
It is a known fact that Instagram’s own account is the most followed on Instagram, with over 209 MILLION followers, but who is the most followed celebrity? Selena Gomez is who.
The Actress and Singer rose to fame with the Disney channel show, ‘Wizards of a Waverly Place’, and later on starred in films such as ‘Another Cinderella Story’ and ‘Monte Carlo’.
She has released many albums and, in 2016 became the most followed person on Instagram.
She is currently 2nd in the Instagram leaderboard, behind the Instagram account, and is actually the most followed celebrity. The 24 year old currently has over 108 MILLION followers!
On September the 25th, 2016 her account past the 100 million followers mark.
Selena Gomez said, ‘it wasn’t my goal to be the most followed person.’
There was a slight battle-of-the-followers back in 2016 with Taylor Swift, who she surpassed for the top spot in March. Beyonce and Kim Kardashian had a similar battle in 2015. Back in that said year, in January, Selena was 5th in the celebrity-leaderboard.
In August 2016, there was a lot of conflict on Instagram between her ex, Justin Bieber, and Miss Gomez herself. There was negative comments towards his new girlfriend, Sofia Richie, from his fans. Selena stepped in, saying, ‘if you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol – it should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you. They were there for you before anyone.’ Justin replied, and then so did Selena again, and soon a hurtful argument began between the two on the social media site, reviling rumors that they had cheated on one another. Later, he made his account private, before making it public again and then deleting it.
2016 was an eventful year for Selena Gomez on Instagram, and that wasn’t the only thing that happened. Later on in the year, she took a three month break from the social media site – it was due to Lupus, Anxiety and Depression. After her long break, she returned to her faithful fans and said a touching message to them – ‘I have a lot to be thankful for this year.. My year has been the hardest yet most rewarding one yet. I’ve finally fought the fight of not ‘being enough’. I have only wanted to reflect the love you guys have given me for years and show how important it is to take care of YOU. By grace through faith. Kindness always wins. I love you guys. God bless.’
The young singer’s most popular Instagram picture is her ‘Coca-Cola’ ad. In it, she holds a bottle with ‘You’re the Spark’ on it – this is part of the lyrics of her song, ‘Me and the Rhythm’. This picture got over 6.2 Million Likes and 250k Comments. In fact, in 2016, the top ten Instagram pictures featured Miss Gomez – 8 of the pictures to be exact! The other two were of Cristiano Ronaldo.
